Week 5

I really didn't get much done this week.

I did these extra drawings to continue with practising the basics but I need to engage and do more sketch work!

For class we were shown the briefs and Ryan talked through a few of them.  I liked the sound of a few, including the 3D environments and character designs.  There were a few based on books like Lord of the Flies, which was one of my favourite books in school so I may consider that as well!
I'll look into the briefs in more detail soon and try and decide.

Week 4 - Pitch Week

I wanted to really get back to basics and build on the kind of drawings that I haven't done in a while. I used to do portraits and still life studies all the time before leaving uni to work and I used to be pretty good at the portraits in particular.
I did this self portrait to see just how much I could remember about the proportions of the face and I actually found it quite difficult!  It took me around 3 hours, which for the level of detail is probably a bit slow.

Still, it doesn't look weird or out of proportion so I just have to practice and hopefully this will all improve!

Week 3 - Live Drawings!

The task this week was to get out and draw some live studies of people in motion.
These were to be quick poses and sketches focusing more on capturing the essence of the pose or movement than any specific details.

I find this kind of drawing a lot of fun. It's challenging to try and capture a moment and at times you could find yourself focusing too much.  It seems the key is to try and capture and remember a snapshot of the pose or action in your mind as well as to capture it quickly in the drawing.

My line work can be a bit messy; not that this is bad, but it sometimes means the images get a bit hard to read. Being lighter with the pencil might help this!

Weeks 1 & 2 - Perspective & tone

The last two weeks have seen us do a few different tasks.  Last week we went out and attempted Perspective drawings and this week we did a tonal study.  Here are my results:

I found the task quite challenging and had to restart a couple of times.  The hardest thing was judging any real depth and finding something to use as a reference for the size of everything in the scene. I need to find the time to attempt more perspective drawings.

I found this task a little easier.  I am certainly out of practice at the tonal drawing, and the range of tones could be better (or at least stronger) but I think I managed to get the proportions of the objects correct.
I could probably have worked a little faster here as well.
