Week 14 cont...

Christmas was awesome! How was yours?

But enough of that!
Managed to push an final kind of sketch out that I'm just going to go with!
No time to fanny about anymore!

Week 14 - Christmas!

I go away for Christmas tomorrow so don't imagine I'll get too much done this week that doesn't involve stuffing my face or having some noisy child jumping on my head! Aint family grand!

But just developed a few more of the best silhouettes!

Week 13 cont...

I thought about the wisdom thing and looked into some symbols of wisdom in cultures!
Obviously there is the usual Owl, but I made a moodboard with a few more!

I also started to develop some of the silhouettes that were my favourite to see if I can't progress towards some sort of design!
I suddenly got the idea of a cape made of light.... I'm sure that'll be easy to do.... lol >.<

Week 13

It's good being out of class! Sometimes it just feels like it gets in the way, although I am my own worst enemy!

I did a few more scribbles and picked a few of them that seemed interesting.
I've never really worked so loosely! I really kind of enjoyed just making shapes and marks and then trying to imagine what shapes could come out of them.

Silhouettes is something I am not very good at so I've found it better than thinking about how it's supposed to be.  It's really difficult not to let the idea "taint" the image. But at this point I'm not trying to come up with an idea just flesh it out a bit so I'm okay with it!

I keep imagining someone adorned with technology or old broken armour so there's some wires and stuff going about!
Some of them look almost childlike so I want to avoid that!

Traditionally the elder/sage type characters in films etc seem to be older - obviously showing some wisdom!

Week 12

Gaahhhh last week already! There was no lecture since we all finished our presentations!

I haven't really fleshed out a look yet mostly I have spent the week scribbling and gathering more images.

I filled about 5 pages of sketchbook before I was all scribbled out!  There are some interesting shapes appearing!

I did a couple of anatomy sketches but I really need to get more into it.

Any characters I have made in the past have always been quite cartoony.  This is partially a deliberate choice to avoid realistic looking images as it isn't easy to do and any time I have made a realistic character it has been a bit off.  Not awful or anything just a bit off.

Week 11

I finally did my presentation this week!
It went okay but I never made a slide show so I have to do that lol

In class Ryan had me choose a brief. Shame on me for leaving it too late!
Definitely too late now to do something like the VFX!

I contemplated the environments - I really liked the image of the cave!
Buuuuuut I also like the idea of creating the Shaman/Sage game character!

So I made some mood boards on the subject!

Ryan had me think about it a little differently by considering some real life potential Sages! People like Willie Nelson! I like the idea but I think I've already started forming an idea...

The brief calls for the character to be based on futuristic technology so I kind of want to create a character that is from a society of people that use (or have discovered) some technology that they adorn their selves with but don't necessarily know how it works as intended!

I'll need to get sketching!

Week 10

I started going to the Life drawing classes which have been pretty good, if a little odd that I'm drawing my flatmate haha
We've done some cool Poses etc!

[LD images]

Err I kinda got bored of drawing the model and drew this guy in class instead... he was standing funny xD

[LD images]

One of the poses we were to use our imagination with! I call him The Diamond Reaper! hah

Week 8

Unfortunately I missed Crit because I went to Glasgow to visit my mum in hospital.

I really need to look at the briefs again I haven't decided on which brief yet and I'm no further forward with work.
The VFX one would be great but I think it will take too long now, though I have been watching some things like The Hunger Games and looking at theirs...

The environment briefs may be simple enough as there isn't any need to rig anything =P

Err useless post but just checking in!

Scrooge!

hah this is really cool! A recreation of Scrooge McDuck by Eder Carfagnini.

I like the idea of the miniatures! The little bit of environment/props really capture the character (as well as obviously the rigging and posing =P)

Week 6 - Briefs

I have to admit I forgot to check out the briefs in more detail so I spent the day today looking into them.
I was mostly interested in the 3D character ones but Ryan also posted up a VFX brief which I would like to look into.
This one involved creating either magic spells for a game, [something] or creating a futuristic user interface that a user could interact with and touch in the air (a bit like Minority Report).

I did a few doodles of this idea.

[doodles]

I'm still unsure as to which brief I would like to pick, however...

Week 5

I really didn't get much done this week.

I did these extra drawings to continue with practising the basics but I need to engage and do more sketch work!

For class we were shown the briefs and Ryan talked through a few of them.  I liked the sound of a few, including the 3D environments and character designs.  There were a few based on books like Lord of the Flies, which was one of my favourite books in school so I may consider that as well!
I'll look into the briefs in more detail soon and try and decide.

Week 4 - Pitch Week

I wanted to really get back to basics and build on the kind of drawings that I haven't done in a while. I used to do portraits and still life studies all the time before leaving uni to work and I used to be pretty good at the portraits in particular.
I did this self portrait to see just how much I could remember about the proportions of the face and I actually found it quite difficult!  It took me around 3 hours, which for the level of detail is probably a bit slow.

Still, it doesn't look weird or out of proportion so I just have to practice and hopefully this will all improve!

Week 3 - Live Drawings!

The task this week was to get out and draw some live studies of people in motion.
These were to be quick poses and sketches focusing more on capturing the essence of the pose or movement than any specific details.

I find this kind of drawing a lot of fun. It's challenging to try and capture a moment and at times you could find yourself focusing too much.  It seems the key is to try and capture and remember a snapshot of the pose or action in your mind as well as to capture it quickly in the drawing.

My line work can be a bit messy; not that this is bad, but it sometimes means the images get a bit hard to read. Being lighter with the pencil might help this!

Weeks 1 & 2 - Perspective & tone

The last two weeks have seen us do a few different tasks.  Last week we went out and attempted Perspective drawings and this week we did a tonal study.  Here are my results:

I found the task quite challenging and had to restart a couple of times.  The hardest thing was judging any real depth and finding something to use as a reference for the size of everything in the scene. I need to find the time to attempt more perspective drawings.

I found this task a little easier.  I am certainly out of practice at the tonal drawing, and the range of tones could be better (or at least stronger) but I think I managed to get the proportions of the objects correct.
I could probably have worked a little faster here as well.
